Review
Greet‘s new album ‘Harmonium 2‘ is a continuation of the previous album, the debut, “Harmonium 1”. This debut then attracted attention because Matthew Broadley known for Dawn Ray’d is the person behind this project, so we can be sure of the political involvement in this dark folk outfit.
The project’s music is, as aforementioned, dark folk played with just a few instruments and very primordial percussion where the vocals often act as the lead instrument. Folk singing that brings to mind Celtic legends once praises, almost idyllic landscapes of pastures and forests of Albion, all complemented by beautiful melodies, which allows for a much-needed moment of escape from reality. And, although from my window I can see snow-capped mountains and dark forests somewhere between the Carpathian Mountains and the Baltic Sea, my thoughts wander over the sun-bright British fields spread over gentle hills crowned with lusciously green forests in the middle of the summer.
Into all this folkloric, somewhat mythical atmosphere is weaved the theme of class struggle. From subtle hints in the Bandcamp descriptions of the two albums to literal song titles like “Revolt” and the opening “Molly Leight,” the song tells the story of an authentic 18th-century figure, Margareth Leight, who, when living on the fringes of society due to rejection by her appearance and independence, was accused of witchcraft, and when she died decided to donate her entire estate to “poor citizens and widows” in her neighbourhood. For many years, stories about the ghost of “Molly” who haunts the area have been carried in local folklore.
Anti-feudal Celtic dark folk about a “journey through death & tragedy; through grief & joy; through anger, revolution & revenge!” is an excellent offering for a leisurely and relaxing Sunday afternoon, and not only for one! You will keep coming back to it.
