Review

What do you get when mixing black metal’s oldest punk roots with 80’s drum machine samples? It results in today’s oddball feature on the antifascist black metal network!

This Qlaglaga-associated project brings us quite an interesting take on blackened crust. Heavy dungeon synth and post-punk influences are laid in a raw analogue demo feel, with black metal guitars. gnarly scratching vocals, and punky melodies in short, pushing tracks. Festral Yong invites us all, second wave, folk metal, and grindcore fans, to mosh to this compact, barely fifteen-minute-long tape.

And while all of these adjectives, all of these genre descriptions, sound like a gimmicky, overboarding project that might be meant as a joke, yes even a meme (just look at the scribbled cover artwork), its implementation, in all its fun, stays matching, unique. This is a serious project from hands that know what they are doing. Surprisingly well arranged and never overboarding in its lofi appeal Festral Yong‘s Haunted Suits might be something you want to play on an old stereo system or wish to hear as a live performance. And it sure as hell would be quite a good match for any punk and crust mixtape on the rawer side of party music.

Open yourselves a good bottle of your favourite beverage and enjoy this freaky tape. It is worth it!
