Review

The Blood Mountain Black Meal Choir is a one-man band from Appalachia which presents us their first demo, with 5 exceptional tracks. As the band states, “[Appalachia] has a long and painful history of exploitation of natural resources, abuse of labour rights, the genocide of Indigenous people, addiction, and a plague of predatory evangelism”. This demo addresses some of the pains that the region experienced.

While the mix and the musical composition are excellent, I’m mainly baffled by the emotions that are transmitted by this music; anger, sadness, despair, longing… Five tracks can seem small, but it’s a lot, and the diversity and complexity of the songs really overcome that. The succession of “Folklore” and “Televangelism“, especially with the first one being acoustic and instrumental, while the second one seems to mix a dozen different BM styles, the bridge reminding the acoustic guitar from “Folklore“, this is a mastery of music that we can listen to!

The person behind The Blood Mountain Black Meal Choir is anything but a beginner in black metal, having worked on Wounds of Recollection and ISLEPTONTHEMOON, so give it a listen, enjoy and feel like you’re in the Appalachia, in a lodge of the Blood Mountain.
