Review
As everyone who actually listens to it knows, black metal can come in many shapes, forms, colours and tones, going way beyond the stereotypical Norwegian 2nd wave stuff into a variety of subgenres – and today’s album, “Spectrum”, reminds us of that in more ways than one. The first full work of Am I In Trouble?, a solo project of Steve Wiener (also of Ashenheart and Eveale, both recently featured in our channel), this album brings seven songs, each titled after a color (all also present in the cover), and each using elements of black metal in very different ways, from the sweeter cleans/flutes in “White” (this reviewer’s favorite song here) to the way harsher atonality of “Red” – there’s avant-garde, there’s a lot of folkishness, and in a very authentic way at that, because there’s no easy comparison to be made (maaaaaaaybe Arcturus, but even that would be a stretch).
Beyond being musically awesome, however, ‘Spectrum‘ is even more fitting for us at the Antifascist Black Metal Network because, as antifascists, we fight for the right to diversity and in defense of the oppressed – in defense of the Palestinian people suffering a genocide at the hands of the Israeli colonizers, in defense of trans people being attacked in the UK, in defense of migrants being deported in the USA, in defense of indigenous peoples fighting back against mining and oil companies in Canada and Brazil and Panama… – and having it in June, the month of Juneteenth in the USA and of Pride worldwide, is even more fitting.
Remember: Stonewall was an Intifada, liberation begins with struggle, free Palestine, and kill all kings!
