Review
A common misconception is that horror cinema is brainless and pointless entertainment, but the truth is that either by playing on social anxieties or allegory or stereotyping, horror is often extremely political, both conservative or progressive, reactionary and misogynist in other times, liberatory and feminist in others, albeit mostly diguised under blood, scares and dark emotions. Unsurprisingly, metal music has been obsessed with horror since the first notes of the first metal song put on wax, but for the most part, bands seem to ignore the subtext and focus on the schlock.
So obviously we love to see bands like Savini (named after the legendary fx, makeup and small part actor without whom horror cinema would not have been the same, from famous classics like Dawn Of The Dead, cult gems like Martin, and even the occasional “wtf” like Bloodsucking Pharaohs in Pittsburgh) that for all the metal horror shock and awe they still make clear that their songs are also about people fleeing persecution and swinging flails for the resistance. In blackened thrash form, too, how cool is that?
You’ll know how cool as soon as the first notes of “Clamoring Ghouls” hit and you realise that your hands are now instinctively holding invisible oranges, right before the air guitar and horn throwing starts. Just three songs, the ‘Into the Arms of Evil‘ EP is bona fide black thrashing metal that’ll have you reaching for the chainsaw. Go on, those boneheads won’t dissect themselves, you know.
