Review

Wape’k Mntu‘ means white devil in the Mi’gmaw language. It is also the title of a demo by a deathgrind project from so-called Canada – Feartilizer 1492, which is entirely dedicated to the indigenous people of Turtle Island. The demo consists of four tracks: the first compares settler colonialism to the all-consuming evil spirit Wendigo, the next is a call for indigenous resistance, the third attacks those who exploit indigenous culture for their own purposes, and the last song is about the social and psychological consequences of colonialism over generations.

Musically, it’s really good, with slower and more brutal death metal moments intertwined with fast grindcore madness, all of which perfectly harmonise with the theme of the lyrics. The tracks open or close with samples of political content. The release of this demo is no coincidence; today, June 21, marks Indigenous Culture Day in the territories occupied by the warmongers of what is often referred to as Canada.

From the land of the Mapuche to the Inuit, colonialism must fall! And of course, FCK ICE!
