Review

Serpente Ancestral is a project from Brazil for which Oniromante is responsible, and today we present to you the full album of this amazing project, entitled ‘Joranda Além Frontieras‘. Some time ago, we published a sample of this project’s capabilities, so we are even more excited about the full album!

A crucial aspect of this project is its visual component, as evident from the cover. Serpente Ancestral aimed at the theme of the indigenous peoples of South America, and it is best if we quote Oniromante himself: “Born under the echoes of posthuman dawn and inspired by the worldview of the forest people, their Shamans, Exus, Pomba Giras, Power Animals, Caboclos, and Enchanted of the Forest, Serpente Ancestral emerges with his work: Journey Beyond Frontiers”.

The whole thing is great black metal, which at times seems to enter thrash or even heavy territories. It sounds great, and the flavour that is added by inserts of the singing of a, presumably, indigenous person, pan flute, or slower moments with acoustic guitar and traditional drums. Blackened thrash meets indigenous Brazilian pagan/folk.

We must get to know the indigenous cultures a little better, take an interest in their rich social heritage, and know the context of colonial oppression, which never ended in Brazil. It is worth taking an interest in the topic for another reason: it may turn out that indigenous communities have long lived more egalitarian lives than the so-called Western world.
