Review: Defenestrate – Sobek (Full EP, 2024) | Blackened punk

It’s blackened punk Sunday y’all! And to properly celebrate, we got the last work by one of the (less rare than what many people might think) young four-piece NY band Defenestrate, which presents themselves as students from the Suny Purchase College.

They show to be staunchly antifascist so we can only be joyful to see folks this young already carrying this political conscience alongside this incredible artistic vision and effort put together offering the listener a rather raw combination of hardcore punk with black metal elements, shining pretty damn well in Sobek, a 4 track EP showing in the cover the Egyptian deity protector of the Nile and its riches and bringer of fertility, often depicted in the likes of a crocodile, his token animal, sacred for those that did cult of Sobek, standing proud in his feet (or claws) in his shiny armour while a city burns. Here, sung in turn also as the instigator for the ‘Rebellion of the Nile’, he also takes the role of god of rage and chaos, and around rebellion does this EP revolves.

A short but intense experience, Sobek is also enough Egyptian-tuned musically to land the atmosphere it promises in the already awesome mix of styles, finishing off with a “A las barricades” cover that will not leave anyone indifferent!

Not sure about you people, but we will head to the Nile’s riverside and witness the uprising. See ya later, alligator!”
