Review: Shades Of Extinction – Demo II (Full demo, 2024) | Raw black metal

A few months after their first demo that we already reviewed, Shades of Extinction is back with a second demo, soberly called Demo II. In the meanwhile, they did participate in a compilation to raise funds for 269 Libération Animale. In the world of antifascist black metal, there is not much raw BM, but Shades of Extinction really steps out and brings some really good quality raw BM, the Slovak band really knows what they are doing.

This new demo follows in all points of the first one, with this raw black metal mixed with DSBM vocals, the attuned drums, and this fog of noise brought by distorted guitars, and constant blast beats. It does not abandon melody though with some riffs that you’ll remember, and the same tortured, itching your precious ears as much as you love it.

Politically speaking, there was no compromise made in the first demo, and there is still none here. The titles of the three tracks leave no doubt: “Slaughterhouse” which talks about antispeciesism, “Imperialist Scum” deals with the ongoing genocide in Palestine “Free Palestine! / We are the resistance / And you’re surprised when we fight back“, and finally the last track “Against Anthropocentrism” is once again self-explanatory. This civilization destroys the planet and our ecosystem, “species disappear each day / The mass extinction / Caused by the vile human hand”.

You are on familiar ground, so enjoy your too-seldom antifascist raw black metal!
