Today’s release by the one-person project from Florida, Dancing Devilry, is a distinctly anarchist and anti-fascist-themed album of great executed black metal.

The sound and production are at a really high level, for sure it is a classic and fresh at once in sound black metal without any doubts or other genre influences. The metal is black, as well as the colour of the flag – and that’s something we love – when a project like this suddenly pops up packed with a political agenda and excellent black metal. The release is titled Voltairine which is a tribute to the Voltairine de Cleyre – an American author and anarchist who lived and worked in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As the artist adds, each of the songs on the album refers to various events related to anti-fascism and anarchism.

And, so we have 6 tracks dedicated to such historical events as the Homestead Strike of 1892 where steelworkers clashed for several days with private security goons sent by a capitalist, a strike that lasted several days and the clashes although resulted in defeat, are today considered pivotal in the history of the US labour movement. There is also a track about Italian anarchist Gaetano Bresci, who carried out the assassination of King Umberto I of Italy on July 29, 1900. Then just after that a track about another Italian anarchist, Michele Angiolillo, who in 1897 did to the country’s Prime Minister Antonio Canovas what the before-mentioned Geatano did 3 years later to the King. Another song deals with Catalan anarchist Francisco Ferrer, who was assassinated by the Spanish state on October 13, 1909, for his educational activities and promotion of private secular schools (Escola Moderna) free from Catholic state control. The official reason for his arrest and execution was his involvement in the 1909 events in Barcelona known as Tragic Week. The last song tells the story of a revolutionary-socialist and, as one might say today, proto-anarchonihilist organization from Czarist Russia – Narodnaya Volya, whose members are best known for successful and permanent detronization of Tzar Alexander II in march 1882.

So much history of working-class struggle and anarchist organizations from the past are just waiting for you to unpack, we are strongly recommending everyone to find out more about these events.
