Review

In a time when queer people are increasingly subjected to constant violence, persecution, erasure, and used as political weapons, expression cannot always take the form of direct confrontation. Sometimes, it is shaped as exposure, a reminder of how it feels to exist under these conditions. And it’s crucial to hear these voices among the many other antifascist musical projects that, too, call for rage and destruction. Today, we are presenting what we missed last year, yet it is still even more relevant, an album and a band that speak from a very real and necessary perspective.

This is Eudaemon, and they present themselves as a queer antifascist black metal band. However, ‘Spiritual Anguish‘ proves this is a more complex amalgam of genres and soundscapes.

Undoubtedly, there is a strong black metal foundation – tremolo-picked guitars, built-up intensity, blast beats, and USBM and melodic roots – but that’s just one of the elements that coexist in their compositions in a very natural way, and each instrument is responsible for it. For starters, the array of options brought by the vocals is a key part of the whole ambience, particularly powerful in their screamo “suit”. The bass and drums are actively shaping the tension and punctuating every dynamic turn, while the guitar lines weave together lower tones, dissonance, fast riffing, and clean passages.

Every song is an example of Eudaemon‘s variety: grunge-like intros that burst into full black metal. Dashes of death metal riffing, progressive elements, rock structures, clean passages… There are no boundaries, and no fear of fragility. And, you know what? That doesn’t make it passive. It makes it realistic and honest.

This is queer expression amidst oppression to the rhythm of very well-written music. A voice that refuses to disappear and must be heard. Because, may we repeat, we won’t be free until every one of us is free!
