This album is interesting for at least 3 reasons. The first one is, of course, the music, and that is electronic black metal with an atmospheric character, including elements of trip-hop, and drone, as well as ambient, noise and dungeon synth. It is more or less a complete picture.
More or less because you have to experience it yourself. You get three songs with vocals and two instrumentals, and these three songs are additionally remixed, giving you even more flavours to try. Atmospheric melodies typical for black metal overrun with programmed drums, hip-hop beat, electronics and even turntabling are really quite a lot. The artist behind this one-person project is Daria, and she has a previous full-length album from 2021 titled The Dark Being. Which we also recommend.
The second reason is Greyfleshteathered‘s interesting approach to releasing the material. After releasing the previously mentioned first album, the artist decided to dig up her old material from almost 20 years ago and give it a second life. For each song to which she wrote lyrics, she invited a different person for vocals, and these tracks are remixed by another DJ for every one of them. We encourage you to explore the work of the invited artists.
The third reason is, of course, the political message. A quick glance at the Bandcamp description and we already know what it’s about. “Terfs and nazis will always die alone. Fuck NSBM and anybody who says metal should or can be “apolitical”. Beautiful right? As for the lyrics, the author touches on the oppression of transgender people, especially the struggle with addiction and mental health. Not only that, there are also a lot of typical black metal allegorical themes about death and destruction.
Black metal is still a vibrant and expanding new music territory phenomenon that escapes genre frameworks. And this album is a great example of that.
