Review: Code Red – “Death March” (Single, 2024) | Thrash metal

Code Red is a project of a young artist playing thrash/blackened thrash. You can definitely feel the grave of the 1980s here when it comes to either thrash or black metal elements. The band can be classified as politically engaged, the artist has anti-imperialist, anti-authoritarian and anti-fascist views, which are reflected in the lyrics.

And so it is with his latest single (the artist already has a short demo), entitled “Death March“, which is dedicated to the events of 1947, when British imperialism decided to divide its “ property” in South Asia into two dominions in the process of post-war decolonization. This division was to follow the religious line between Hindu India, and Muslim Pakistan (which at the time included the territory of today’s state of Bangladesh). As one can easily guess, such an arbitrary decision on the lives of millions ended in tragedy, with numerous ethnic cleansings, exiles and related violence, including the sexual one. Between 14 and 18 million people were affected by this step, of whom an estimated one million died.

The song itself, “Death March,” recounts events known as the Amritsar train station massacre in eastern Punjab, where Sikh death squads awaited eastward-moving Muslims. The number of dead is estimated at around a thousand, and the wounded at three times that number.

Hail the goat, destroy imperialism!
