Review: Traktat – “Subdue the Filthy Pride of History” (Video clip, 2024) | Black metal

The full album of the Bremen-based project Traktat will come out in October, and it’s definitely something worth noting. The band has released a stunning rehearsal demo, and now we present the video from their new single “Subdue The Filthy Pride of History.”

Musically, it’s great black metal with mostly blasting but sometimes more laid-back and complex drums, mind-bending raw black metal riffs which also mostly speed and only occasionally slow down and snarling emotional vocals. On top of that, there is a clear political message and as we read in their bio on Bandcamp Traktat is a “Dogmatic antifascist hate“.

The project makes excellent use of the audiovisual form of the music video, their Instagram features short rehearsal videos with a very immersive character imaginative shots from unusual angles, and interesting effects that give the impression of old VHS recordings.

It’s no wonder that the music video promoting the single is so cool, and by watching it even several times you will discover more great shots and notice imaginative compositions. Two scenarios are permanently flashing through, a basement-like rehearsal room and a hilltop bonfire surrounded by monoliths of urban architecture. The whole thing cries out for words like “ritual” or “mysticism” but with the addition of “urban” or “modern”. It’s full of the previously mentioned imaginative shots, from once quite sizable drum kit juxtaposed against a cramped rehearsal room to a stunning shot of the moon and the figure of the singer, through glimpses of a leafless branch over the glow of a campfire.

The band clearly has a complex nature to the project, where to the music we get audio-visual impressions and as for the lyrics or meaningful song titles, similarly there is a story waiting to be discovered. Remember -October 2024 full album of Traktat.
