Review: Reva – Urban Madrigals (Full album Premiere, 2024) | DSBM, post-black

Releasing tomorrow, we’re excited to premiere Reva‘s second album, Urban Madrigals. Somewhat reminiscent of Bonjour Tristesse‘s Your Ultimate Urban Nightmare with its cover, Reva explores the “impact of modern society and its relentless pace on our lives“, delving into the duality of the social isolation we all feel and constant connectivity via the Internet.

Combining depressive post-black metal with aspects of prog metal creates a beautifully melancholic atmosphere, with the use of clean vocals adding to the sorrow as well. Thematically, the album touches on the various ways in which society (and more overall, life) makes us feel isolated and haunted by the past throughout. This introspection means the phrase “Memento Mori” is never too far from the back of your mind as you examine the futility of life, and Reva makes a point to remind you of this with the song “The Way of Separation” too. The closing track, “Dreams By Frames“, brings the album to a close in an almost hypnotic way that also cycles back around to the start in an almost ironic way given its representation of death.

A solid follow-up to their debut, this is an album you should definitely check out!
