Review: Παγανή Κυριακή – Παγανή Κυριακή (Full album, 2024) | Blackened dungeon disco

Today is Easter Sunday for the Orthodox and Oriental Christian world who follow the Julian calendar, unlike those western Gregorian heretics, and as it’s arguably the most pagan of all Christian holy days (shhhh, don’t tell them) it’s only fitting we feature a fresh band called Παγανή Κυριακή (pronounced Pagani Kyriaki and meaning Pagan Sunday in Greek).
This dungeonwave/synth/disco black duo takes a deep dive into Greek pastoral traditions, and stories of demons, goblins and vampires and taps into the very thing that most black metal and dungeon dwellers often forget and makes these stories extra special: they are FUN. Yes, paganism can be deadly serious, but it also needs whimsy and quirkiness, or to put it bluntly, if I can’t dance like an idiot then it’s not my solstice ceremony.
Παγανή Κυριακή nail it. They are serious enough to definitely not be confused with a “comedy band” but still eccentric and fun enough to not be like constipated synth kvltlords. This album is amazing, the people behind it are great and 101% antifascist, and we swear those things on the tripod bearded dudes’ heads are mushrooms, not penises. Or are they?
