Review: Gonemage – Spell Piercings (Full album, 2024) | Nu metal, black metal

We welcome the return of Gonemage in ABMN, the project of the hardest-working-person-in-the-metal-scene Garry Brents, who has graced us with numerous releases (also with Cara Neir, Homeskin and other names, really too many to mention) in the last years while retaining a high level of quality in everything he does and also at the same time expanding his stylistic and multi-genre encompassing explorations.

With Spell Piercings, Gonemage’s sixth full-length album in less than four years, Garry goes deeper into the latest genre that has influenced his sound over the last years, after grindcore, screamo, chiptune, post-black metal and others; the much-maligned new metal. Yes, some of you may cringe right now, but new metal indeed had many original and ground-breaking ideas at the time, especially if you go beyond the level of mainstream bands. Gonemage manages to resurrect the weirdest and most interesting aspects of the sound, the jumpy groovy drum beats and funky bass, the whispered distorted vocals, the industral-ish synth tones and electronic beats, mixed with the classic references in Garry’s musical universe like more extreme black metal oriented guitars/vocals and a noisy production, the chiptune elements, and so on.

The result is a pleasantly jarring, unpredictable and innovative record that doesn’t sound like anything else. Do you want your metal weird and original? You can’t go wrong with Gonemage.
