Review: Sun Of Nothing – Maze (Full album, 2024) | Post-black metal, sludge

Sun Of Nothing are not just another band, they are a phenomenon. They were the linchpin that turned the tide of the Greek heavy music scene in an era it was entrenched in traditionalism and finally dragged it into an era where “sludge”, “hardcore” and “experimental” were not dirty words to be ashamed of. And when they assimilated the rhythm section of cult black metallers End along the way they only became darker and stronger.

Now, after 14 looooong years of the dark and heavy music scene being poorer for their absence, they are finally back, and like an enraged kaiju, they return with an overwhelming show of force. Maze is Sun Of Nothing distilled. It’s got all the elements that made them special, the post-x elements, the black metal dirge, the crushing sludginess and Ilias’s distinctive inhaled banshee shrieks, all of them turned to 11, like a familiar, warm and welcoming bed of nails. Our getting to feature them is an honour. Their being on our side is a gift.

Play this one REALLY loud.
