Review

Has anyone else noticed how many different variations of black metal exist? You got your black/- hybrids, your blackened’s, your various adjectives like “raw” or “depressive” or “bestial” or add-ons like post- or -gaze. Isn’t it Awesome?

Seriously, black metal is such a versatile and rich umbrella, it’s why it would be a crime to leave it as fodder for fascists and bigots in the first place. But sometimes even the most eclectic palates crave something primeval. something lacking too many adjectives and descriptors beyond the ones simply denoting one’s quality. Behold, The Shade Of Crow, of Rio De Janeiro, the brainchild of Igor Goularth and, drumroll, a band that plays black metal.

Pure and simple, although not simplistic, what you get when you listen to Capítulo II: Oceano is a prime auditory example of the black metal experience many of us had growing up when the genre was much smaller in the spectrum, not retro, but choosing to stand in the foundations of it all.

Even better, it’s the second of three conceptual EPs, which means not only is there a previous one to discover, but also a next one to expect. Pretty cool, huh?
