Review
Blackgaze is one of the most interesting transgressions that black metal has gone through; how many fans from its first era, thirty years ago, would have guessed that it would be combined with one of the most gentle and emotional genres of rock today, and that this would prove to be a successful and long-standing endeavour? Today, we feature the third full-length album of the blackgaze self-identifying band from Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Amimia.
The album begins with a quite impressive cinematic, almost cold wave sounding intro that would prepare you for anything to come. And not surprisingly, things take a heavy and dark turn; this is blackgaze much closer to atmospheric and depressive black metal, with the scent of autumn and rain following the melodic and spacious riffs, rather than the sunny, positive vibes we are used to from other bands. And this tone stays pretty much consistent throughout the album, making it probably not an ideal suggestion for a party beer drinking session. This is deep, dark, introspective music with a few rays of light showing up occasionally in the corners. Not only does it not end up being monotonous, but it is composed and produced really well, and you feel the intensity rising and rising throughout the album, as well as a sense of vastness and sublimity created by the soundscapes.
If you are a fan of bands like Ethereal Shroud or ColdWorld, it is an absolute recommendation for your atmospheric/depressive/blackgaze autumn nights.
