Review

The Brazilian duo Aurora Ortus returns today with the premiere of their brand-new full-length: ‘Against Ourselves’!

As we heard on their previous release ‘Ostrara‘, they blend post-black metal with atmospheric passages and slow doom-like structures. Their latest single, “Drought,” already hinted at a refinement in their compositions, which is fully realised on ‘Against Ourselves‘. The title, on the other hand, couldn’t be more fitting lyrically and musically, as it pictures inner torment as a natural response to a world that has exhausted us to the point of pushing us against ourselves.

Musically, ‘Against Ourselves’ builds on the foundations of ‘Ostrara‘ and evolves into slower, more melodic, doom-driven tracks, creating an atmosphere that is both suffocating and liberating. This duality is reinforced by the production: cleaner yet more organic, letting the tortured vocals cut through the clarity, like a knife through soft cloth.

If ‘Ostrara‘ felt like mourning, ‘Against Ourselves‘ is an empathetic and awakening invitation to stay, observe, learn, persist, and resist. And we will remain, among other things, awaiting what Aurora Ortus brings us next.
