Review: Aurora Ortus – Drought (Official vídeo, 2024) | Post-black metal

It has been almost two years since we were introduced to Aurora Ortus through their 2022 album Ostrara, showcasing an obscure and heartfelt post-black metal, altered with doom and blackgaze inspired. Today, we are happy to have them back with the premiere of a brand new song in the form of an official video, “Drought“, the first single of an upcoming (soon) full-length.

The visual work represents “the contemplation of life and memories, and the depression that leads to the ultimate decision: to leave this existence“, showing the members playing all different instruments, and completing the essence of the song’s theme through beautiful, contradictory, and sad recorded momentums.

Musically, this track alone shows how the Brazilian duo has progressed in every sense of the word. While they still deliver well-crafted post-black metal, the production is now much cleaner, and this particular song, more melodic-doom-driven. It makes sense then to see one of the members wearing a Heretoir t-shirt on the video and be reminded of the post-black German trinity formed along King Apathy and Thränenkind.

Keeping in mind that this is just a (very good) sample of Aurora Ortus‘ new step, and knowing how rich their compositions were already in Ostrara, this is nothing but a huge incentive to look forward to what’s coming after “Drought“. We promise to keep you informed!

Lyrics:

I fall in oblivion
into the void of nothingness
Reality isn’t tangible
I cannot deal with this mess

An open letter to my ghosts
An open door to exit wounds
A farewell to my mortal shell
In this cruel world where I fell

I crave to be alive.
I’m crawling (crawling) in this world of lies.
Why (why) [why] can’t I type my veins out.
Till my heart ends up in drought
Obsolete and incomplete
Anguish in solitude
I become nothing more.
Dreams of amplitude
Isolation, In my mental shore

A commonplace to disaster
A wasteland of senses
Dive into the unknown
The madness, the sour taste of no life

The existential void
The deepest roots of my pain
To live and to give up
are flipsides of the same coin
