Review: ‘Austerity – Despondency – Longing’ by Botgörelsen / Wrekan / Astral Lore (Full split, 2024) | BM

ABMN has always cherished split and collaborative albums for the many reasons expressed before: collective work, and uniting different genres, cultures, and points of view… And it’s one lazy click into discovering /re-visiting more than one band!

Today’s upload brings three different bands within the same raw and straightforward black metal, offering slightly different sonorities.

Austerity – Despondency – Longing starts with two songs by the 2019 Sweden-based solo project Botgörelsen, carrying the Swedish sound in its rawer form, and filled with impassioned compositions.

From the same location comes another one-person project that we had welcomed before, Wrekan. Three tracks keeping the crudeness with a clearer production, a crustier approach, and really powerful atmospheres.

The final point is made by Astral Lore, an international duo between Portugal and France, with a single song, mind you, of almost 18 minutes. That won’t be the perception when hearing the different passages and stages this piece offers, though. As soon as you immerse yourself in this sorrowful creation you’ll be led to the end without even realising it is already over. Quite a wise ending for this shared release.

As smart and representative of their music as the split’s title: Austerity – Despondency – Longing. For raw and atmosphere lovers… Write down this split!
