The Brazilian project Bruja Ácida we have already had the opportunity to present to you with the ‘Nakba‘ EP. So let us quickly remind you – the release was entirely dedicated to the genocide in Palestine, and the music was already slipping out from under the genre framework. Ambient, drone and even stoner with elements of black metal… For the full album, self-titled Bruja Ácida, they still have a strong political message in almost every song, as we’ll discuss in a moment. So let’s start with the music first. The drone/stoner component of the music clearly dominates here, and even provides an outlet for heavy/psych metal. Modulated guitars over typical stoner style give a hypnotic and just… acidic feel. The modulated vocals seem to incant spells and the added movie samples and psychedelic percussion along with the occult vibe of the cover artwork coherently complete the whole.
It would seem that this kind of music would be accompanied by lyrics about dark hedonistic rituals, ancient cults, magic, other dimensions or the roar of spaceship engines breaking the barriers of time and space…. Well then no, but actually a little bit yes. Some works indeed deal with succubi, witches and Satan’s lettuce, but some deal with anti-fascist issues like reckoning with the not-so-distant rule of Bolsonaro and the fascistization of the state, anti-imperialism and precisely criticizing the supremacist policies of Israel, or environmental issues such as the issue of the Amazon fires.
The whole thing adds up to a very good heavy/psych doom metal album, and the awareness that there is additionally a specific anti-fascist message here makes it even more enjoyable to listen to. A wave of anti-fascist stoner metal is something we deserve in these hard times.
