Review: Cinerea – Cinerea (Full EP, 2023) | Atmospheric post-sludge

Today we bring a Berlin-based quartet making á la Belgique/’USesque’ atmospheric post-sludge with lyrics and titles in Portuguese, Italian, and English. Oh, and they are called Cinerea.

The quartet presented its debut EP at the end of 2023, and there is so much thought and effort put into it we could be making an essay instead of a review. It contains five songs “meant to form an experimental cohesive picture of afflictions from various unforeseen and unescapable psychological ordeals“, and they have worked towards capturing that sentiment through every aspect of the record.

Cinerea juggles with intensity in a way that you can feel the different stages of every story they are telling. Not only genre-wise but also by dualizing with the different languages mentioned above to fit the adequate frame. Through atmospheric post-sludge, post-black metal, and some truly tasteful hints of neocrust, they articulate concepts and themes that give voice to SA and child abuse victims, describe the struggles of racial oppression, and make a beautiful symbolism about fragility, in a toxic masculinity context, with “Cerâmica” (ceramics).

Cinerea is one of those albums your ‘grey matter’ will be thankful for if heard in silence while reading the lyrics, and the extensive context the band has given of each song on their Instagram page.

We can’t wait to hear more.
