Review
Dolorous Gnaw returns with an hour-long album entitled ‘Wretched Void‘. As a reminder, this is a side project of Ivory Primarch’s bassist. Both bands previously featured on ABMN. What we are dealing with here is experimental noise with a strong ambient and industrial character. It consists of one song, and the entire track is dominated by a heavy industrial beat, around which all kinds of unsettling elements unfold. Dark, abrasive electronic sounds appear throughout — at times resembling police sirens, at others gunshots — or maybe that’s just the listener’s imagination.
That uncertainty is part of the experience. With this kind of music, everyone can, and probably should, interpret it in their own way. For some, it might evoke the flapping of a helicopter; for others, the sound of an old modem. A visualiser was released alongside the album, intended to serve as a backdrop during live performances, but it also stands on its own as a separate and immersive experience. Something like the film Begotten, but in colour and with a cyberpunk aesthetic.
A strong work, both for personal journeys and as background sound for everyday activities.
