Review
Ιt’s quite an alluring concept for artists to explore a very different, even opposite side of themselves sometimes. It was even an occurrence in the black metal scene, where dungeon synth proto-experiments often took on the role of presenting a more human side of the musicians. We wouldn’t say that Donjon des Quiétudes is exactly the mirror image of Noir Donjon, the French dungeon synth artist we’ve featured before, because Noir Donjon isn’t a completely pitch-black entity either. But there’s a clear difference in that this side project, or alternative side, or however they wish to call it, has its focus on creating an atmosphere of serenity, lightness and peacefulness, compared to the melancholic darkness of Noir Donjon.
The music is mostly characterised by gently plucked harp-like melodies echoing deep into the forested valley with its hilltop castles that the cover photograph shows (after all, the title translates to “The Peaceful Valley“). A well-needed beautiful break from the grim everyday reality that we all need, in other words.
