Review
DYBUK is a Polish project that plays black metal with hardcore punk. When it comes to punk, the vocalist has much to scream, as he is the vocalist and guitarist in the well-known street punk band Analogs, which does not avoid political messages, including anti-fascism. Same here, but we’ll talk about the lyrics a bit later.
A dybbuk is, in the folklore of Central European Jews, the soul of a dead person who takes over the body of someone alive. Something like a possession where the unfortunate one functions on the edge of two worlds, suspended between the past of the sinful soul and experiences hardship, tormjkent, loneliness and rejection in his present. This characterization of the myth resonates with the lyrical and musical layers of ‘Pożoga‘.
The lyrics shouted in Polish are very political, there is a criticism of consumerism, talks about the annihilation of animals, religious blindness, authoritarian governments leading to ethnic cleansing, ecological devastation and a lot of anti-nationalist lyrics. The last theme particularly resounds in the song “Orszak Maryjny” (processions for the Mother Mary- a very catholic and Polish thing), where this very procession will liberate others from the rainbow, and the brave charge of the Polish hussars will crush the infidels. These are obvious references to recent events in Poland like the wave of homophobia and the anti-refugee campaign powered by both conservative and current liberal governments.
Musically, it’s a really good piece of black metal with punk. The vocals are strong, powerful and clear, the guitar plays mind-bending riffs, and the rhythm section rushes mercilessly. If you love black metal and punk, you will spend a lot of time with the ‘Pożoga‘ album. Ough!
