Review

Experimental metal fans gather, as today we present the 5th album of Echoes of the Moon, a metal band from Chicago, Illinois. No, you won’t be listening to any Sufjan Stevens-style folk strumming from Echoes of the Moon, but the catalogue of already released material from this project features a wide breadth of musical references, from shoegaze and post-rockish atmospherics to avant-garde and noisy soundscapes, while still having a very central metal influence (even at its non-metal material).

While albums like 2024’s ‘Absence‘ and 2019’s ‘Presence‘ have such characteristics, this year’s ‘Extract‘ is undeniably a metal album with rasping black metal vocals and riffing that shows elements of technical black/death metal, centred around a more expansive post-metal vision, with lyrics that tackle issues like exploitation and the ruination of human creativity through AI. There’s a lot of thought and talent behind these long, expansive compositions, so Echoes of the Moon bears a lot of potential for the future, for sure, and an already big body of work that welcomes exploration.
