Review: Förfallet – VE (Full album, 2024) | Post-black, DSBM

From Stockholm, we bring today a bit of sharp and cold tunes to alleviate this still-starting week.

Förfallet (“-the- decay”), a post-black ensemble that presented their self-titled, self-released debut back in 2020, offers us some company with their latest work to date, named Ve, that will soon see a vinyl release and given the craftmanship of this record we can surely tell it is more than worth cherishing in any collection.

Written entirely in Swedish, Ve (“agony”) is an album that hooks you from the first moment in Obotlig, keeping a hypnotic rhythm and pace with a dark atmosphere, with breaking times when voice and bleeding riffs burst and melt in a piercing and at the right times melodious composition.

The result is outstanding progressions from a doomy tempo that keeps on most of the time in almost the entire album, with persistence in each song’s signature core riffs and occasional striking passages when you can even distinguish intense but moody solos shining hinting slightly at hardcore in an interesting convergence of artistic features, leaving a palpable sense of oppressiveness and asphyxiation and the image of the self diluting in a void after an endless fog, if the listener lets the lamenting notes carry your thoughts through the experience. A perfect soundtrack for the weekly loop of existence that is the shallow current of everyday modern monotony and routine for a healthy dose of cathartic excellence.
