We’re very happy to feature Genital Shame, Erin Dawson‘s one transwoman powerhouse for the second time in ABMN, after the full-length album Chronic Illness Wish at the beginning of 2024 which caught up our attention and introduced her experimental and very unique take on black metal to a wider audience. Erin obviously doesn’t like resting on her laurels and provides us with another recording very soon, a three-track ep called As Good as a Kiss.
For those unfamiliar still with Genital Shame, it’s still quite hard to provide a short kind of description as to her sound. It’s a style which seems to combine influences as disparate as math rock, post-rock, indie, and maybe even a hint of prog and atmospheric metal together with black metal. You shouldn’t expect much repetition or minimalism from Genital Shame, but the density of the compositions and many changes in riffs and tempos are equalized with atmospheric and slow acoustic or ambient breaks which give breathing room to the music. The album culminates in “As Good as a Kiss, Pt. 1” which is one of the most intricate and thought-provoking compositions Genital Shame has offered us up to now, followed by the slow and contemplative second part.
The EP sounds dark, sensual and personal as the rest of Erin‘s work. Even outside of the context of black metal, Genital Shame makes bold and outstanding art that should absolutely get noticed more.
