Review
If there is one thing to be happy about regarding the contemporary metal scene, it is that there are more and more antifascist metal bands coming from the Global South, defying the hegemony of Europe and the USA in the genre. Gruta is an antifascist black/death/crust band from Bogota, Colombia and ‘Hymnus Atram Ad Mortem‘ is their second full-length album.
The band describes their style as “chaotic black metal,” and it’s easy to see why, as their influences are quite varied stylistically, yet consistently lean towards aggressive, straightforward black metal. There are crusty downtempo rhythms, blastbeats, classic mid-tempo headbanging riffery, and of course, some thrash and death metal influences. The changes in tempos and riffs are quick and many, and there’s no chance you’ll get bored with their material. Warning: we imagine you will certainly have to warm up your neck before seeing them live, to avoid any accidents, as their style is perfectly suited for this environment.
All in all, it’s a great sophomore album that can certainly open up the band to the wider metal scene, and we’re just happy that we get to see many more bands nowadays with a classic black metal sound but anti-authoritarian, antifascist and anti-nationalist themes.
