Review: Hilary Hutchinson – Morningstar (Full EP, 2022) | Rock, alternative metal

At Antifascist Steel (and ABMN for harsher music) we are proud of the broadness of artists we bring. Fighting gatekeeping and helping artists experiment as much as they want with their work are part of the struggle against oppression that we stand for, after all.

And it’s in this spirit that today we bring Morningstar, the first EP of Hilary Hutchinson, an experimental folk artist from Melbourne, Australia. Hillary defines her music in Bandcamp as “sexy cowgirl music that curls right up in your ear,”, and Morningstar looks like black or gothic metal if you judge by the cover art, but the music itself is more a type of psychedelic, bluesy folk/drone/country.

Yes, these are all words, and they sound very complex, but the music is really not that complicated, it’s just hard to describe. There are many droning sounds, some acoustic sludgy guitars, some soulful singing a la Chelsea Wolfe, and a LOT of trippy, expansive soundscapes that are almost hypnotic. Hillary does something quite unique and unexpected, and it’s a worthwhile addition to our catalogue!
