If there would ever be a more fitting cover for this compilation it would be just slightly lighter than this pitch-black square that we are presented with for Fragmented Revelations by Hipoxia.
Gathering all those songs from Hipoxia that would usually be hard to find on a physical medium, be it from being only released in splits or only digitally, this collection of rarities brings us raw, impenetrable darkness, these slow spine crushing drones that manage to slow down the world around you. All that while never remaining within the strict boundaries of one genre.
Wandering from the bone braking drone metal, as we know it from maybe f.e. Bell Witch, to nearly post-punk and electronic-inspired ominous synth, works in between the doom tracks easily breaking the ten-minute mark. From now and then they even return to thriving black metal blasts.
As known from collections we do hear some different styles of production, though it always supports the dark and down-pulling atmosphere of the tracks. Aside from this last bonus track “Nothing MMXIX“, which certainly feels like one of those early demo tapes, there always is this pulsating bass that holds raw, heavily distorted guitars. Strong saturated vocals screeching and dialogue samples in between like a needle on broken vinyl, while never leaving a certain groove, do add to the overall mood of those old metal tapes you want to hear on the highest volume.
Hipoxia wants us to “listen in darkness at maximum volume” and yes, this album seems to be made just for that. This is pitch-black music.
