Review
Αs we mentioned in previous uploads as well, we’re very happy to see so many new antifascist metal bands lately coming from the global south and challenging both narratives that metal is a European business and an apolitical culture. Today we are presenting Kréen from Chile, an atmospheric black metal/doom band existing from 2019 and ‘Aurora‘ is their third recording, a 21-minute EP coming after two full-length albums. The history of colonialism and the ongoing struggle of indigenous cultures and people against its modern forms is, after all, a very metal topic, and Kréen are not shying away from it.
In fact, one of the two songs in the EP is a cover of a political song recorded in the 70’s by folk/progressive rock band Los Jaivas against the dictatorship of Pinochet, repurposed to address the dispossession in the area of Patagonia (where the band is from) caused by livestock elites and extractivist transnational interests. The release shows a band in an already mature course, presenting a heavy and full sound of quite epic, melodic black metal, interspersed with doomier parts and acoustic folk moments. A great first taste of their upcoming full-length, for which we are very excited.
