Review
Hello there our beloved listeners, would you be able to spare us 10 minutes today? If so, you’re still in time to jump for some groovy and muddy sonic aggression by the hand of Gabriel Berger (see Wilgskill) with a new fresh (or rotten, we could debate it on an abstract/conceptual level) project in Light The Pyres.
In this brief time aforementioned, Gabriel experiments in this EP with a classic musical texture mixing black metal with crust very reminiscent of iconic bands in the crust and hardcore circles, and an old and well-known blend that is as timeless now as it is the theme manifested in ‘Death of the Megafauna‘, a harsh exploration on the climate anxiety for what’s to face yet thinking of the precious cycles the planet and the species on it have already gone through wired by the crooked hand of humanity and the void of restless and limitless exploitation. From hopeless there’s a bitter yet bright flame to be born though, as always have been cast in punk and more when we start leaning to green and anarcho-punk with more and more charged manifestos to resistance and to radical change, and with work as aggressive and raw, as it would be expected, Gabriel also surprises the listener with breaks and melodic prowess with the lead of the filthy vocals as it is appropriate to embody the cathartic vortex of emotions encapsulated in this EP.
If you like sounds from Iskra, delving into darker to more progressive sounds going to Nux Vomica, Ictvs and even the first embodiment of Panopticon in the S/T and splits era all finding each other here and there, this is gonna be a delight and maybe a beacon to light some pyres today for you.
