Review: Lust Hag – Lust Hag (Full album premiere, 2024) | Black metal

We are in the midst of some sort of renaissance in the black metal sphere, we get caught up with those that continue the old ways or even the iconoclasts that reject them in favour of doing something different and reject the status quo/ trve kvlt. So while we are here we get the small privilege to see bands start up and even some go. The ones that begin and stick around we are so fortunate to see evolve, grow and especially hone in on their particular sound/ style.

Missoula’s own Lust Hag is no different. After a successful first couple of EPs and a few splits with the likes of Floodhag and Bury Them and Keep Quiet (praying and sacrificing to Satan, Eleanor continues her conquest of bringing trans people together for splits, especially with the almighty Feminizer). Whereas Lust Hag’s first two EPs are drenched in vampiric goodness, the self-titled debut isn’t necessarily a rejection of that but rather something that moves past it while retaining some of that early influence in a small way. Rather Lust Hag brings in a slew of influences from her own time working with other artists to even her own musical influences. Here we see a strong melodic shift with a perfect overlay of synths with pummeling death metal-like riffs that’ll have you banging your head and stomping your feet.

The descriptor of “feral black metal” honestly is perfect for Lust Hag. While an air of familiarity is here for Lust Hag, she’s unapologetically making space for herself and others who don’t fit the mould of what is black metal and making it ok to be, well, feral.
