Review

Few subjects have been explored in metal as much as religion; some bands are inspired by it, while others (most, in fact) are adversarial to it. mumuksu falls firmly into the second camp, and thankfully, when many use their supposed opposition to religion as camouflage to disguise their racism, antisemitism, islamophobia or ethnonationalism, the Malaysian sower of doom does it for all the right reasons. ‘breaking GOD’ rails against blind subservience to entrenched belief systems, herd mentality, the death of personal autonomy and self-responsibility, and the submission to fear.

And the first thing you’ll notice in this release is the passion. Trishay feels every note, every word, in his soul, and howls it out for all to hear. These are not the sounds of academic detachment but those of someone who has been touched by the issue, who has felt the anguish of living under religious despotism and is desperate for freedom. And it is that passion (and the disgustingly heavy and slow riffs, of course) that draws a parallel from Mumuksu to Mizmor. Except where Mizmor were first mourning their loss of religious belief and then coming to terms with their new, terrible freedom on a personal level, Trishay is raging against the weight that seeks to keep him and everyone around him in ‘holy’ chains, whether they like it or not.

This is mumuksu raging against the dying of light. Witness them!
