Review
“Necropolitics” is a concept introduced by Cameroonian historian and political theorist Achille Mbembe, which, in brief, describes how regimes utilise social, political, and military power to determine who lives and who dies. He uses the genocides in Palestine, Kosovo and Africa as examples of the application of this. Today’s band in ABMN‘s channel, Nekrokratie, translated as “necrocracy”, that is, a regime in which a dead person is considered its head, or a regime imposed by now dead people, which is a different idea, but, in our opinion, is connected by a similar thread: death as central to a regime’s power. This German group plays extremely raw black metal. It is not at all shy in showing its opinions: their previous EP had songs called “Sic Semper Tyrannis” (the phrase supposedly by Brutus when murdering Julius Caesar in ancient Rome) and “Phosphorus Weiss” (after White Phosphorus, an extremely flammable product which use as a weapon is strictly prohibited by international law… yet remains used by the colonizing army against Palestinians, by the Russian army invading Ukraine, and others), and a cover with a red fist choking a serpent with a swastika for eyes.
What we bring today is their first album, ‘Ein Blutig Frühling‘, which comes with the same message to past ages: as the band itself says in German, “the plague may come as divine punishment, but the king is dead and the country is now free“. We love raw black metal, we love bands that are not shy in their politics, and we are sworn enemies of genocidal regimes… And we believe in the possibility of the final victory of the exploited of the oppressed of mankind in its war against all kings, dictators, exploiters and oppressores, even if many of us hurt and suffer and die to get there. Nekrokratie inspires us to go forward, with, as poet William Ernest Henley says in “Invictus”, our heads “bloodied, but unbowed”, for a free Palestine and the downfall of all tyrants!
