It is no accident that Offerbarn‘s debut album was named Vejen til Lys (which translates to “The Road to Light”) and released on March 31st, the Trans Day Of Visibility, as the bands sole member Kat chose this album to reflect the experience of transness, to quote directly from the horse’s mouth “From the self hate, to the external pressures and prejudices we experience, to all of the love, hope and beauty we fight to achieve“. Here in ABMN have already reiterated time and time and again that if black metal is the expression of the outcasts and the marginalized that most claim to be, then transgender and gender non-conforming people should be right there at the forefront, and the same goes for intersectional class struggle, something sadly proven by the speed with reactionaries and fascists target trans people the moment they come into power, like we are now witnessing in the USA. In other words, transphobe leftists can fuck off, and being trans is quiet literally krieg, every day, just for the basic right to exist.
The music of course is heavy as shit, progressing from the bands 2022 demo into a more tight and targeted hybrid of black metal and metallic hardcore, with nods, conscious or not, to the Holy Terror era and equal parts heavy breaks and blast beats, tremolos and melody, black metal shrieks and brutal growls, sugar and spice and everything nice we want from this type of music. It may be less ‘processed’ and polished, but it has that raw DIY glow that is even better and fits right there among names like Immortal Bird and Book of Black Earth in the black metal/hardcore Venn diagram. And it’s fucking angry too, but that is to be expected. Anansi called it after all: “Angry is good. Angry gets shit done“.
