Review
Described by the band as an “exploration of grief and bereavement”, today’s upload is going to be an emotional hard-hitting one. Let Me Join You by Our Wits is full of grief, sadness and anger as the band navigates the listener through the all too-familiar feelings of loss and emptiness and the stages of mourning not only the loss of a loved one, but also the loss of who you used to be as a person at different periods in life. As we find ourselves into transitioning seasons (spring or autumn depending on hemisphere), and plants start to bloom or wither, it’s a sombre reminder that no growth comes without loss – and in turn, how much we lose throughout our lives.
The post-hardcore/emo influence of La Dispute shine throughout, particularly with the title track, “Let Me Join You…” having traces of “St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Blues” in the intro; and emotionally, it’s just as devastating too (seriously, listen to this and then La Dispute’s Somewhere at the Bottom of the River between Vega and Altair, and tell us you’re not a puddle of tears afterwards). Lyrically, the album shifts from sadness and despair to a dull acceptance of both loss and death itself, much like the cycle of grief. This truly is an incredibly emotional album, one that makes it almost difficult to write about, so all we can do is tell you to check out the album to see for yourself.
