Review

We don’t mention often enough how much the RABM/antifascist scene has grown in just a few years. And the many bands that are being born, either—brand new, raised from ashes, side projects of settled bands, or anonymous entities.  With the state of the world and society, there is really no wonder. Using art as a form of protest has been a magnificent tool to create social consciousness and – most part of it – is accessible to every socioeconomic class. And to build Networks, and reclaim spaces. This is why ABMN is here and why we are always so excited to host new projects, especially – sorry, we are a political channel after all – if they are so explicitly vocal as today’s feature.

Poisse – which means “sticky bad luck“, slang for social misery – is a newborn project from France whose members have been involved in the punk DIY scene with several other bands – Matrak Attak (crust), Morbid Scum (stench core), Civilian Thrower (grindcore) FASP (noise duo),  Satan (BM punk), Bumwelt (noise),  Djanina (indie rock), Romeo must die (hardcore crust) and Mindfuck (punk), through a DIY label, by making custom gear, or by being a music maniac involved in zines, collectives, and bookings for a long time. Now, they have all gathered under the name of Poisse to play black metal punk with – we quote – “various impure influences“.

Their intentions and political stances couldn’t be clearer even if they didn’t use dark poetry or very old French words for the lyrics of their debut album ‘À L’Affût‘. From calling out the CRAs (something like Administrative Detention Centres) for the oppressive and racist useless entities they are, rejecting states and borders (“Hostiles“), about the profit-focused system that exploits the people and the land (“L’appat du rien“), against authoritarianism (“À L’Affût“), mental health (“Suinte“), and – quoting the band – “the sublimation process of corrosive anger against abuses as a woman” (“Nox“).

Straight-to-the-point lyrics that also come with a very well-crafted sound in the vein of old-school black metal. It is full of punk-driven momentum, while also carrying a good amount of melody, and shifting to a more danceable blackened roll at times. Subtly splattered with other musical references,  and “Suinte” being the most different within the 5-track lot, opting for a sludge-infused direction.

I ain’t reading all that” so I will make it short: Poisse is a premium package of an antifascist black-punk band. Crystal clear politics, and enjoyable as fuck. One more great addition to this still very niche scene that’s growing stronger with each one of these bands.
