The community of Squatted Prosfygika in Athens, one of the biggest squats in Europe with over 400 people living in 8 squatted buildings, is being threatened with destruction again. In summer 2025, the local government secretly initiated a contract for the plan of eviction and “renovation” of four buildings of the community, driving forward the gentrification of the area; the eviction supposedly started in July 2026. While the community has faced such a threat again other times during its 16 years of existence and was able to fight back, this time it’s the most serious effort by the state to get rid of it.
The state’s arguments are based, of course, on lies, as the community has managed to create self-sufficiency through self-organisation, having 22 different structures that do various kinds of social and maintenance work in the buildings and in the neighbourhood itself. Just as an example, an excuse that is used by the state is the need for the creation of a facility for hosting patients and relatives of the adjacent cancer hospital “Agios Savvas”, a structure that has already been created by the community with the cooperation of the workers’ union of the hospital! The real goal of course is nothing else than the destruction of a real and functioning proposal that Prosfygika represents, for a communal organisation and self-determination outside of the capitalist system. The proof lies in its vibrant and diverse community of people of different countries, backgrounds and cultures, from political radicals to refugees and migrants and people of the neighbourhood, struggling and organising together for a common cause.A member of the community, Aristotelis Chantzis, is on the 58th day of a hunger strike with the goal of stopping the plans of the municipality. His health has already seriously deteriorated, and he is in grave danger, as today he fainted in front of the police station where he is forced to give his monthly presence. He demands immediate cancellation of the contract and that all residents of Prosfygika stay in their homes. In the meantime, the community has presented a plan for the restoration of the area with its own self-financing, demanding no public funds. It is also reaching solidarity on an international level. There are many different ways that you can support this revolutionary struggle. By supporting the firefund which we will link to below, by signing up and spreading the collective statement by 80 collectives and organisations, and by coming to Athens and getting involved in the community itself.
