Review

Karhunvartijan Tyhjiö is a band from Turku, Finland, and if, by some miracle, you haven’t yet heard them, now is your chance. Especially since the ‘Ruttivirta‘ EP presented today is a foretaste of their upcoming debut full-length album.

The band’s name translates into something like “bear guarding the void,” and it is certainly very pagan and about nature, as well as very Finnish. In Finnish folklore, the bear is an extremely important creature, considered equal to humans. This is safe escapism because the band members are anti-fascists.

The style is melancholic, raw black metal in really good execution. With both clean singing that turns into a decent black scream, melodic guitar parts that suddenly enter into a hellish fury, and a mercilessly rushing rhythm section. The EP has two balanced tracks, one slower and more melancholic, and the other cruelly fast and brutal.

In truth, it’s well worth listening to. Just like supporting the Finnish anti-fascist movement.

Koko Suomi ilman natseja!
