Review

There’s a very specific type of black metal that is not precisely atmoblack, yet manages to create an immersive soundscape; it’s not raw black metal, but it manages to go straight to the throat in its speed and violence. It’s not prog, but there is something that bends one’s expectations that can’t quite be pointed out; it’s not post- or – gaze but is very effective at unexpectedly tugging at the listener’s heartstrings amidst the raging instruments.

The Bolognese antifascist band Siberian plays exactly that type of black metal in its debut album, “Deadly Sins”, which was released just last month. There’s obviously a lot of old-school black metal inspiration here, as evidenced by the cover and song titles, but if we had to choose a single thing that this record made us think of, it would be the first album by Wormwood, from Sweden; there’s a lot of the same concerns with melody, even if it’s not always as pronounced, and similarly, the hardest hitting track is a completely unexpected, almost acoustic, folk-tinged track sung in Swedish by an uncredited female vocalist, “Kråkevisa”, right in the middle of the album (also reminiscent somehow of Wolves In The Throne Room of all things). There are a lot of things to like in “Deadly Sins” for those who with attention to detail, and a lot of potential in Siberian‘s music!
