Review

The Dutch (black) metal scene never disappoints, and today’s upload is no exception! Teardrinker’s debut EP, ‘Killing the Flowers Will Not Delay Spring‘, may be short, but it’s sweet, empowering and hopeful.

On a day like today, when an employment tribunal in England ruled that simply sharing a changing room with a trans woman created a “hostile and degrading environment” for a transphobe and violated their [the transphobe’s] dignity, it can be bleak. ‘Killing the Flowers Will Not Delay Spring‘ is a perfect “fuck you” to this shitty system, with the last song, “Equilibrium“, being a call to fight back. Kim‘s screams turn from those of fury to urgency, backed up by the instrumentals, challenging their rage into rebellion. It’s a gradual buildup from the slower intro to “Water/Well“, which makes it even harder-hitting.

While this review is for their EP, we must also give their new single, “To the Ones Whose Bodies Shall Shake the Heavens“, an honourable mention. Both releases are messages of not only anger, but queer hope, joy and community – which are so important to have, and represent, in today’s political climate. Even the title of our featured EP is a reminder that trans people have always existed, and will continue to exist, no matter how hard governments around the world try to strip us of our rights. There’s a fine balance between rage and joy that Teardrinker manage to capture perfectly in just 2 songs – if this is how strong their debut is, we cannot wait to see what else they can do in the future!
