Review
Tylo, the personal project of Tylo Gardner (also the bassist of Seattle atmospheric/prog black metal band Izthmi) has always been standing at a crossroads between two usually quite different in presentation and aesthetics genres; one the (gothic Americana, blues, folk-infused) singer-songwriter style and the second is of course underground metal (doom and black metal).
Her debut full-length album The Descent, which we’ve had the pleasure to present in Antifascist Steel, was for the most part a dark folk record with an alt/grunge edge and a doomy, dark feel. Her next EP 6 included perhaps the heaviest song she’s recorded that far and as you might guess from the title, she has been continuing in this direction, presenting us with her darkest and most metal recording. Eschewing the conventions of the singer-songwriter genre, Of Rot and Rebirth is not just centred around her husky, bluesy (and obviously very special) voice, but packs the power of an underground doom/black metal album.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that Of Rot and Rebirth is one of the bleakest recordings of the year; the darkness is just oozing off the record and its hardest parts can cause some serious headbanging, just take the absolutely vicious ending of the same-title song for example. Fans of artists ranging from Emma Ruth Rundle and Chelsea Wolfe to Ragana would do well to discover this wonderful artist and we hope she finds her way into a wider audience!
