Review
And finally (with a bit of delay!) we are presenting today the album of the London-based post-black metal band Unmother, after the single “My Armor” that we premiered a few weeks ago. It’s not a secret that many of us had a lot of hopes after 2021’s excellent debut ‘Lay Down the Sun‘, for Unmother is not just a band with laid out politics against fascism, racism, and sexism. Still, they also show a maturity and seriousness in their material that is usually the result of bands with far more releases and history, whether that has to do with the overall aesthetic, the production, the lyrics and all else.
Don’t expect to find fantasy or escapist references in Unmother, as its focus is on the dystopian city landscape and its ill effects on our psyche. This is expressed musically through post-black metal that is more aggressive and dark than is used from this style, showing old school black metal influences in the riffing, together with electronic and synth sounds, some post-punk influences (to be clearly seen in their choice of an ΟΔΟΣ 55 song as a cover) and several samples.
To be especially noted is the last song and epic outro of the album, “Magda“, which is a reference to the mother of the murdered by the nazis of Golden Dawn antifascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas, who took a very important role after their persecution. ‘State Dependent Memory‘ is definitely the kind of album we were expecting from Unmother, and puts them in a place of one of the most promising bands in antifascist black metal right now. We hope to hear more from them soon.
