Review

Hello yet again, dear listeners and stubborn haters, coming back to us. This is ABMN, and we got a spicy submission rolling in this fine Wednesday. Or maybe “spicy” is not the word we might want to stick with for this first description, not literally at least.

We are actually heading to the cold of Mordovia, a western province in Russia, following the first chapter of the sprouting fantasy atmoblack / punk project Vedmaahn, with a single person behind, Voidcitizen (see also the crusty project Pot’ma). We are delving into this first EP, which encompasses four songs in around 20 minutes (up), named ‘Traces from the Ancient Realms (Part 1)‘.

Musically speaking, this is quite a moving work where the punky bits alongside its melodic structure and stringwork take the show on themselves, following the lead of the raspy vocals. With pretty well done bridges between verses and main sections, either the clear bass chords or captivating riffs would certainly deliver for the epicness of this work framed in the imaginarium of the Russian folk tales and Slavic mythos and the optics of Gnosticism, with a cover artwork that can possibly depict the main inspirational figure Voidcitizen mentioned to us: Ivan Bilibin, in the looks of something closer to an Elder Scrolls Dunmeri persona for this occassion (and, why not, a Kitty Cat that is surely also relevant). All of which is set up with the band logo, as original and easily recognisable as any other details in this EP and the project so far in itself, with several items, cultural patterns and background adding to the trippy feel of this listening adventure.

We also need a bit of a break from the grave and dire political projects from time to time! If all of this caught you by surprise and hooked your interest as much as it did to us, open the doors to explore Pleroma with Vedmaahn!
