Review

Right, let’s get the obvious part out of the way. Yes, Zalaam are Palestinian. And after everything that has happened, if that alone isn’t enough to make you pay attention, we’re not sure that banging on about how this is a genuinely crushing atmospheric black metal EP will.

To Resist the Enemies of the Sun is the kind of atmospheric black metal that hearkens back to some of its mid era progenitors. Drenched in reverb, vocals distorted in post, mid-tempo drums contrasted by tremolo picked guitars, and vibe-y synths that soar over the entire piece. And not to mention the cold album cover that reflects the cold music.

There’s a lot of pain here, and Zalaam’s lyrics capture the vulnerability of the Palestinian struggle, all while proclaiming the need for the world to be rid of all tyrants, as well as fighting the lies of Zionists and genocide apologists. As bleak as this EP can be, this is an empowering call to action that we at ABMN will always platform. Be a part of that action. Fight for Palestine. And let Zalaam be the soundtrack to that battle.

Lyrics

01. “To Resist the Enemies of the Sun”

Death is the colour of the future

War is its sound

Gratified by genocide

Beating souls around

All for the sake of might

All For the sake of a few

Whom we all shall fight

(Monologue)

Knighted by diseases of glory

To obtain it they’d tell any story

They lie, they shall die

They lie, they shall dieWith a sword

With a dagger

Poison to smear its blade

With a shovel

With a hammer

It’s how heroes are made

Rid the world from tyrants

Ripp the tyrants from the world

02. “We Wither, We Rot

The nightfall bends the world below, so we wither, so we rot.
